Wood, steel, and leather are my preferred mediums. I like to carve and smith things. Things related to birds, nature, history. Things that embody the environment I work in.

Carving serves as a great way to spend time outdoors, connecting with the natural world. It is a summation of many of the things that I enjoy most in life -- being outside, a knowledge and understanding of plants and nature, sharp things, making functional objects from nothing, and working with my hands. I create because it’s the only thing to do. We live in a world of cheaply mass-produced everything. I strongly feel that functional art is the best art and that having something to hang on the wall is all well and good, but surrounding oneself with tools, clothes, utensils, everyday objects that have also been raised to the level of art is something worth working toward.

About

I grew up in Hancock New Hampshire. I spent most of my formative years on the edges of ponds, or in the dappled shade of the woods looking, learning, and taking it all in. It was these escapades in nature that cemented my love of science. To this day I spend as much time as possible in the woods. While I had always enjoyed making things and creating art, it was not until middle school that I realized I could combine art and science. By age 13 I had decided that my future lay in the field of paleoillustration. This decision influenced my path thenceforth, and led me to Arcadia University as a Scientific Illustration major. Never having spent much time outside of my rural homeland, the transition to suburban Pennsylvania was something of a shock. So I vowed to spend as much time as possible in the woods when not at school. The summer after my sophomore year, I began working as a camp counselor at the Nature’s Classroom site in Hancock, NH where I discovered just how much I loved teaching young folk about nature, science, and self-sufficiency. My art has changed drastically since beginning to work in outdoor education. I have shifted more toward functional art and wood carving, and am currently exploring the possibility of combining scientific and folk arts.
